Boldr Universal Thermostat Fault Detection: A Diagnostic Tool for Techs

Many thermostat callbacks are not thermostat problems. They are wiring mistakes, a tripped condensate switch, or a misconfigured terminal that nobody caught before leaving the job. The Boldr Universal Thermostat is designed to surface those issues for you, at install and afterward, so you find them before your customer does.

Verification at the Wall

Wiring errors are a leading cause of install-day delays and return visits, especially when a thermostat has to work across different equipment types. The Universal Thermostat includes on-device wiring verification, so a technician can confirm connections at the thermostat itself rather than guessing, power cycling, or running a full system test to find a miswire. Catching a mistake in the first few minutes of a job is cheaper than catching it in a callback.

Flexible Terminals, Confirmed Setup

The Universal Thermostat uses re-assignable terminals, configured through the Boldr Pro App. That flexibility helps with unusual wiring and mixed equipment, and it makes setup verification more important, not less. Pairing flexible terminals with on-device verification gives technicians a way to confirm that what is configured matches what is physically connected.

Detecting Equipment-Side Faults

Beyond wiring, the Universal Thermostat is built to detect faults tied to the equipment it controls, including:

  • Condensate switch faults, a common cause of unexplained shutdowns when drain lines back up.
  • Economizer faults on systems that use them.
  • L terminal faults, which can signal system problems that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Surfacing these conditions gives technicians something concrete to investigate, rather than a vague "it stopped working" call from a customer.

Why This Reduces Callbacks

A fault that is detected and flagged early becomes a scheduled, planned service visit instead of an emergency. For a contractor, that changes the economics of service in three ways:

  1. Fewer blind truck rolls, since the technician arrives knowing what to look for.
  2. Faster diagnosis, since the thermostat has already narrowed the field.
  3. Better customer perception, since the contractor appears proactive instead of reactive.

Built for Every System Type

The Universal Thermostat is designed to work across mini-splits, heat pumps, VRF, central AC, boilers, fan coils, and hybrid systems. A consistent diagnostic approach across system types means technicians don't need to relearn how to troubleshoot controls for every job. One device, one workflow, and one set of diagnostic cues are easier to train on and easier to support.

Install Scenarios

The thermostat supports common install scenarios, including a simple like-for-like replacement, installation at the equipment, and installation at the air handler. Fault detection and wiring verification apply across those scenarios, helping technicians get through non-standard jobs with confidence.
