Cleaning a Daikin mini-split filter takes about 5 minutes and is the most impactful routine maintenance you can perform. Daikin recommends cleaning the filter every 2 weeks during periods of heavy use, and monthly during lighter use. A clean filter prevents coil freezing, maintains energy efficiency, and reduces the risk of fault codes like A5.

Step-by-Step Filter Cleaning
Step 1 — Turn off the unit. Press the ON/OFF button on your Daikin remote. You do not need to cut power at the breaker for filter cleaning.
Step 2 — Open the front panel. Grip the bottom edge of the front panel and lift upward. The panel is hinged and will swing up to a locked-open position. On some Daikin models, push-tabs on the sides release the panel.
Step 3 — Remove the filters. Daikin indoor units have two mesh filter panels — one on the left, one on the right. Each slides out from a groove. Pull them gently straight out. No fasteners hold them in place.
Step 4 — Remove loose debris. Tap the filter lightly over a rubbish bin. Use a vacuum brush to remove surface dust from the mesh without pressing it deeper into the material.
Step 5 — Rinse under warm water. Hold the filter under warm running water, rinsing from the back side (clean side) through to the front (dirty side). This flushes debris outward. Avoid hot water and soap — both can damage the mesh material.
Step 6 — Inspect. Hold the filter up to a light. You should see light through the mesh across the entire surface. Gently massage any blocked sections under running water.
Step 7 — Dry completely. Lay filters flat or hang them in a well-ventilated space for at least 15–20 minutes. Reinstalling a wet filter traps moisture inside the unit, which can lead to mold growth and odor.
Step 8 — Reinstall and reset the filter indicator. Slide both filters back into their grooves until seated. Close the front panel. To reset the filter cleaning reminder: on the Daikin remote, press and hold the FILTER SIGN button (labeled on the remote) for 2 seconds until the filter icon clears from the display.
Daikin-Specific Filter Notes
- Some Daikin models include a secondary titanium apatite deodorising filter or photocatalytic filter behind the main mesh. These are typically cleaned with a vacuum only — do not rinse under water. Replace every 3 years or per the schedule in your owner's manual.
- The streamer discharge filter (on select Daikin models with Streamer technology) should be cleaned with a dry cloth only.
- If the main mesh filter has visible tears or holes, replace it. Contact a Daikin dealer for the correct replacement part number for your model.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean my Daikin mini-split filter?
Every 2 weeks during heavy cooling or heating season, monthly during lighter use. If you have pets, allergies, or a dusty environment, clean every 2 weeks year-round. The Daikin remote's filter indicator light will alert you when cleaning is due based on runtime hours.
What happens if I don't clean the filter?
A clogged filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil, causing the coil temperature to drop below freezing. This triggers freeze protection (A5 error code), reduces cooling output significantly, and can eventually damage the fan motor from sustained restricted airflow.
