Daikin Mini-Split Blinking Light: What It Means

When your Daikin mini-split's operation light blinks, it is communicating a fault code through a repeating flash pattern. Each number of flashes corresponds to a specific error. Counting the blinks correctly is the first step to diagnosing the problem — and often determines whether you can fix it yourself or need a technician.

How to Read Daikin Blink Codes

Observe the OPERATION indicator (green light) on the front of the indoor unit. Count the number of flashes before the light pauses. After the pause, the pattern repeats. Some codes involve both the OPERATION and TIMER lights flashing in sequence — count each separately.

Flash Count Code Fault Action
1 flash A1 Indoor PCB fault Reset at breaker; call tech if recurring
3 flashes A3 Drain level fault Clear condensate drain line
5 flashes A5 Freeze protection activated Clean filter; let coil thaw; restart
6 flashes A6 Indoor fan motor fault Check for obstructions; call technician
Timer: 4 flashes C4 Coil temperature sensor fault Call technician — thermistor replacement
Slow continuous blink Standby / timer active — normal No action needed

Slow Blink vs Error Blink

A slow, steady blink (once every 2–3 seconds) from the OPERATION light usually indicates the unit is in timer mode or receiving a standby command — this is normal. An error blink is a rapid repeating pattern (e.g., 5 fast flashes, pause, 5 fast flashes) that continues without stopping. If you cannot clearly tell which pattern you are seeing, count 60 seconds of blinks to confirm the sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Daikin green light is blinking 5 times — what does it mean?

Five flashes corresponds to error code A5 — freeze protection. The system has detected that the indoor coil temperature is too low, usually because of restricted airflow. Clean the air filter, let the unit sit off for 2–3 hours to let any ice melt, then restart. If A5 returns after cleaning, the issue may be low refrigerant charge.

The blinking stopped on its own — is it fixed?

The fault code cleared, but unless you resolved the underlying cause, it will likely return. A5 (freeze protection) often self-clears after a defrost cycle, only to return again if the filter is still clogged or airflow is blocked. Investigate and fix the root cause, not just the code.
