Mini-Split Compressor Not Running: Causes and Fixes in 2026

If your mini-split's indoor unit is running (fan is blowing) but no cooling or heating is occurring, the compressor may not be running. The compressor is the heart of the refrigerant circuit — without it, no thermal exchange takes place and the system is essentially just a fan. This guide covers every reason the compressor might not run and what to do about each one.

How to Tell If the Compressor Is Running

Go outside to the outdoor unit while the mini-split is set to COOL or HEAT with a temperature demand (setpoint below or above current room temp). A running compressor produces a distinct hum from the outdoor unit cabinet — different from the outdoor fan sound alone. You should also feel warm air exhausting from the top of the outdoor unit during cooling. If the outdoor fan spins but the cabinet is silent and the exhausted air is ambient temperature, the compressor is not running.

Common Causes and Fixes

Cause DIY Fix? Action
3-minute protection timer active Yes — wait Wait 3 full minutes after any power interruption
Active error code (E1, E2, P8, etc.) Depends on code Note and address the code first — compressor will not run with an active fault
Low refrigerant — low pressure lockout No Call EPA-certified technician — refrigerant leak check
Failed run capacitor No Call technician — capacitor replacement ($150–$300)
Outdoor unit not receiving power Partially Check dedicated breaker and outdoor disconnect switch
Failed outdoor PCB (control board) No Call technician — PCB diagnosis and replacement
Compressor seized / failed No Call technician — compressor or system replacement

Step-by-Step Diagnosis

Step 1 — Confirm mode and setpoint. Ensure the unit is set to COOL or HEAT (not FAN ONLY) and that the setpoint creates a temperature demand.
Step 2 — Wait the protection timer. After any power interruption, wait 3 full minutes before expecting the compressor to start.
Step 3 — Check for error codes. Note any code on the display — a compressor will not start while an active fault code is present.
Step 4 — Check the outdoor disconnect. Verify the outdoor disconnect switch is in the ON position and the dedicated breaker has not tripped.
Step 5 — Listen at the outdoor unit. Is the outdoor fan spinning? Is the compressor humming? A fan spinning with no compressor hum points to a capacitor or compressor fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

The outdoor fan spins but the compressor does not hum — what does that mean?

The outdoor fan motor and the compressor have separate power paths. A spinning fan with a silent compressor indicates the compressor is receiving a start command but not starting. The most common causes are a failed run capacitor (prevents the compressor from starting under load) or a faulty outdoor PCB not sending the compressor start signal. Both require a technician.
