Mini-Split Noise Levels: What's Normal and What's Not

Most sounds a mini-split makes are completely normal — and knowing which sounds are expected prevents unnecessary service calls. At the same time, certain noise patterns do indicate real problems that need attention. This guide covers every common mini-split sound, explains what causes it, and tells you definitively whether it is normal or a sign of trouble.

Normal Sounds — No Action Needed

Sound When Cause
Soft hiss or gurgling During operation, startup, shutdown Refrigerant flowing through expansion valve
Click at startup or shutdown When unit turns on or off Thermal expansion/contraction of plastic housing
Thud or click during heating mode Every 30–90 min in cold weather Reversing valve switching for defrost cycle
Steam from outdoor unit During heating in cold weather Frost melting during defrost cycle — completely normal
Water dripping from outdoor unit During and after heating defrost Melted frost draining — completely normal
Low continuous hum During operation Compressor motor at normal operating speed
Fan speed change sound As inverter modulates Fan ramping up or down — normal inverter operation
Beep at remote command When remote button pressed Command received confirmation tone

Sounds That May Indicate a Problem

Sound Likely Cause Action
Rattling or vibrating Loose panel, debris in fan, loose mounting Inspect and tighten; check for debris
Grinding or squealing Worn fan motor bearings Call technician — motor nearing failure
Loud continuous hissing near connections Refrigerant leak Turn off unit; call EPA-certified technician
Rapid clicking without starting Failed capacitor — compressor can't start Call technician — capacitor replacement
Banging from outdoor unit Debris in outdoor fan; loose component Turn off; inspect fan for debris; call tech if clear
Continuous beeping with error code Active fault condition Note error code; reset; address the fault

Frequently Asked Questions

My mini-split makes a swooshing sound every few minutes — is that normal?

Yes — this is the inverter compressor modulating its speed up or down as demand changes. The fan speed changes slightly with it, producing a subtle swoosh. This is the inverter doing exactly what it is supposed to do — adjusting output to precisely match the room's needs rather than cycling on and off abruptly.

My outdoor unit makes a loud rushing noise for about 5 minutes then stops — is that normal?

Yes — this is almost certainly the defrost cycle during heating mode. The system briefly reverses refrigerant flow to melt frost off the outdoor coil, producing increased fan and refrigerant noise for 3–10 minutes. When the defrost completes, normal heating resumes and the noise returns to baseline.
