There are two of us in this house now. There used to be four.
Same nine rooms. Same heating system. Same thermostat in the same hallway it's been in since we moved in. But most days, my wife is in the kitchen and I'm in the office at the other end of the house, and every other room sits empty and warm from seven in the morning until we go to bed.
Last January's bill was the third one in a row that came in higher than the year before. I did what everyone does – stared at it, said something rude, and put it in a drawer.
Then I actually worked out what we were paying for.
The advice you get is a comfort tax
Look up how to cut a heating bill and you'll find the same list every time.
Turn the thermostat down a few degrees. Wear a sweater. Close the curtains. Add insulation. Seal the drafts.
Some of that is genuinely worth doing – insulation and draft-proofing are real improvements and I've done both. But look at the top of the list again, because that's where the actual money is supposed to come from, and what it's really saying is: be colder.
That's not a saving. That's a payment in a different currency. You're being asked to spend the winter slightly uncomfortable in your own house so the number on the bill goes down, and if you're at home all day you'll feel every degree of it.
Nobody ever suggests the obvious alternative, which is to stop paying to heat rooms nobody is in.
Why that's hard to do on purpose
Because your heating system can't do it.
There's one thermostat. It's in the hallway. It measures the temperature in that one spot, and when the hallway is happy, the system shuts off. Every room in the house is being heated to whatever keeps that one sensor satisfied – the ones we're sitting in, and the seven we're not.
It doesn't matter whether you've got gas, a heat pump, or electric heat. The equipment is different, the arrangement is identical: one sensor, one decision, every room.
The system has no idea where anyone is. It was never built to know. It heats the envelope, and the envelope includes four bedrooms that see about twenty minutes of human activity a day between them.
That's the bit that got me. Not that heating is expensive – heating is expensive, rates have gone up, that's the world. It's that most of what we were buying was being delivered to empty rooms, and no amount of turning the dial down changes the ratio. It just makes every room colder, including the two we actually use.
What actually changes it
The change is small and slightly counterintuitive: turn the whole house down, and heat the room you're standing in properly.
Not down to freezing. We keep the house at 62 now, which is enough to protect the pipes, keep the place from feeling like a cellar, and take the edge off the hallway. Then the office is warm while I'm working in it, the kitchen is warm in the evening, and the bedroom is warm before we go up.
The two rooms we're in are more comfortable than they used to be. The seven we're not are cooler than they used to be, and neither of us has noticed once, because we're not in them.
And it turns out this isn't some fringe idea. According to the EIA, about 37% of American households already supplement their main heating with a second source, and nearly half of those are using portable electric heaters – the single most common choice in every climate region in the country.
A third of the country is already heating this way. They're just doing it with a plastic box on the floor that they have to remember, that they can't leave running, and that tells them nothing about what it costs.
The catch
Worth being blunt about, because this is the difference between saving money and just spending more.
Heating one room properly only saves you anything if you turn the rest of the house down. Leave the thermostat where it is and add heat on top, and you've added a running cost and nothing else. Your bill goes up.
The saving is in the trade. House down, room up. If nobody in your household will agree to that – if someone wants the whole place at 70 all winter – this isn't going to work for you and you should keep your money.
It also doesn't replace your heating system. Ours still runs, just far less, and it still keeps a large old house from getting cold and damp in the parts we're ignoring.
What it replaces is the assumption that comfort has to be delivered to every room at once.
What I looked at
Zoning the ductwork. Genuinely the right answer, and quoted accordingly – dampers, a second thermostat, someone in the ceilings for a week, and a number that would take a decade of savings to justify.
Better space heaters. We had two. They're loud, they live on the floor, you have to remember them, and I was never entirely relaxed leaving one running in a room I wasn't in. That last part matters more than it sounds, because a heater you can't leave running is a heater that can't save you anything while you're not there.
Cheap infrared panels. Right physics, wrong product. Flat, wall-mounted, no fan – but no schedule, no sense of whether anyone's home, and no way to see what any of it costs. Which puts me back to being the system's memory.

On efficiency, honestly
I want to be careful here, because this category is full of nonsense and I nearly dismissed the whole thing because of it.
A watt is a watt. Any heater that claims to turn one watt of electricity into two watts of heat is lying to you, and the infrared heaters advertised on late-night television have earned every bit of the reputation they have.
So here's what's actually true, in three parts.
One: where the heat goes. Blowing hot air heats the air, which rises to the ceiling and leaks out through the walls. Radiant heat lands on you, the furniture and the surfaces, so the room feels comfortable at a lower air temperature. Same physics, different destination.
Two: what it draws. A standard portable heater pulls 1500W. The panel in my office pulls 450. For the comfort I actually wanted in that room, it turned out I never needed the bigger number.
Three: when it runs. Which is the largest part, and has nothing to do with physics. It only runs when that room's schedule says so, and the house isn't being heated to 70 to keep the hallway happy any more.
