Cleaning a mini-split takes 20–30 minutes and requires no special tools — just a soft cloth, mild household cleaner, and a garden hose for the outdoor unit. The single most important task is cleaning the indoor unit's air filter every two to four weeks during active use seasons. Neglecting mini-split cleaning is the leading cause of reduced performance, higher energy bills, musty odours, and premature system failure.

What You Need
- Soft cloth or microfibre towel
- Vacuum with brush attachment
- Mild dish soap or no-rinse AC coil cleaner spray
- Warm water
- Garden hose (low pressure) for the outdoor unit
Step 1: Turn Off the System
Turn off the mini-split using the remote, then switch off the circuit breaker for both indoor and outdoor units. Never clean any part of a mini-split while powered on.
Step 2: Clean the Indoor Air Filter
- Open the front panel of the indoor unit — it typically lifts upward or unclips at the sides.
- Slide out the mesh filter screens (usually two).
- Rinse under lukewarm running water until the water runs clear.
- Gently scrub with a soft brush and mild soap if visibly dirty.
- Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before reinstalling — reinstalling wet filters promotes mould growth.
- Reinstall the dry filters and close the front panel.
Frequency: Every 2–4 weeks during heavy use; monthly during lighter seasons.
Step 3: Wipe Down the Indoor Unit Body
- Wipe the exterior of the indoor unit with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth.
- Use a vacuum's brush attachment to clean the intake vent openings.
- Wipe the swing louvers (the horizontal fins that direct airflow) with a damp cloth.
- Do not spray water or cleaning product directly into the interior beyond the filter area.
Step 4: Clean the Indoor Coil (Once Per Year)
- With the unit off and filters removed, apply a no-rinse evaporator coil cleaner spray to the visible coil surface.
- Allow 5–10 minutes for the cleaner to foam and drip into the condensate drain below.
- The coil does not need rinsing — condensate during normal operation carries residue out through the drain line.
- Reinstall filters and restore power.
Note: For a deep indoor coil clean involving removal of the casing and steam cleaning, hire an HVAC technician. This service costs $150–$300 and is recommended every 2–3 years for heavily used systems.
Step 5: Clean the Outdoor Unit (Each Season)
- Turn off power at the breaker before touching the outdoor unit.
- Remove leaves, debris, and any vegetation from around and inside the casing.
- Using a garden hose on low pressure, spray the condenser fins from inside the unit outward — this pushes debris out rather than further in.
- Never use a pressure washer — the aluminium fins are delicate and bend easily.
- Allow the unit to dry for 15–20 minutes before restoring power.
Signs Your Mini-Split Needs Cleaning
- Reduced airflow from the indoor unit
- Higher electricity bills with no change in usage
- Musty or mouldy smell when the unit runs
- Ice forming on the indoor unit or refrigerant lines
- Filter indicator light on the display
- Unit runs longer than usual to reach set temperature

What Is the Boldr Smart Controller?
The Boldr Smart Controller makes it easier to stay on top of mini-split maintenance. Klima's Guardian Mode monitors your unit's energy consumption continuously — if usage rises unexpectedly, it is often one of the first signs of a dirty coil or a developing fault. You can also set filter cleaning reminders in the Klima app so maintenance is never overlooked. Klima installs in under three minutes with no wiring and works with any mini-split brand.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean my mini-split filter?
Every two to four weeks during heavy use seasons, and at minimum once per month during lighter use periods. In dusty environments, pet households, or homes with heavy cooking, every two weeks is recommended.
Can I use a pressure washer on the outdoor mini-split unit?
No. Pressure washers damage the delicate aluminium fins on the condenser coil. Use a garden hose on low pressure or a standard tap with a spray nozzle. Bent fins reduce efficiency and require a fin comb tool to straighten.
Why does my mini-split smell musty after cleaning?
If a musty smell persists after filter cleaning, the evaporator coil likely has mould growth. Apply a no-rinse AC coil cleaner spray to the coil (accessible behind the filter). If the smell continues, hire an HVAC technician for a professional deep clean.
How much does professional mini-split cleaning cost?
Professional cleaning costs $150–$300 per indoor unit in the US. Technicians use specialised tools to clean the evaporator coil, drain pan, and blower wheel — parts that are difficult to access without disassembling the indoor unit casing.
