Mini-Split Compressor Won't Start: How to Diagnose

When a mini-split's indoor fan runs but the compressor never starts — no cooling or heating, no outdoor unit activity, just air movement — the system has one of several identifiable faults that prevent compressor engagement. This is distinct from the outdoor unit being completely off; the indoor unit is powered and the fan is working, but the compressor is blocked by a protection condition or a component failure.

How to Confirm the Compressor Isn't Starting

Go outside while the unit is running in COOL or HEAT mode. A running compressor produces a distinct low-frequency hum and the outdoor fan spins. If the outdoor unit is silent and the fan is still, or if the outdoor fan spins but there is no compressor hum, the compressor is not running.

Causes and Fixes

Cause Signs DIY? Action
3-minute compressor protection delay Unit just powered on or reset; fan runs but compressor silent for first 3 min Yes Wait 3 full minutes — this is normal startup protection
Active protection code (E1, E2, E4, etc.) Error code displayed; compressor blocked by protection circuit Partially Note the code; address underlying cause; reset at breaker
Failed start/run capacitor Compressor hums briefly then stops; outdoor fan may spin; clicking sound No Call technician — capacitor replacement ($150–$300)
Tripped breaker on outdoor circuit Indoor unit powered normally; outdoor unit completely dead Yes Check the outdoor unit's dedicated breaker; reset once
Communication fault between indoor and outdoor E6/CH05/U4 communication error code; outdoor unit unresponsive Partially Reset at breaker; check signal wire connections at both units
Refrigerant leak — low pressure lockout E2 code; compressor attempts to start then shuts down immediately No Call EPA-certified technician — refrigerant leak check
Failed inverter/PCB board No error code; all power confirmed; compressor confirmed good; board fault No Call technician — PCB/inverter board diagnosis ($400–$900)
Failed compressor (end of life) All other causes eliminated; compressor confirmed drawing excessive current or seized No Call technician — compressor replacement or system replacement decision

The 3-Minute Rule

Every mini-split compressor has a built-in startup delay of 3 minutes after power is restored. This prevents the compressor from starting while refrigerant pressures are still equalising — starting under unequal pressure causes compressor damage. If you just powered on the unit, just reset the breaker, or just had a power outage: wait a full 3 minutes before concluding the compressor is not starting. This single rule resolves a large number of "compressor not working" calls.

Frequently Asked Questions

My outdoor fan spins but I hear no compressor — is the compressor dead?

Not necessarily. The outdoor fan starting while the compressor stays silent is the classic symptom of a failed run capacitor. The capacitor provides the startup boost the compressor motor needs — without it, the fan (which has a lower starting current requirement) can run while the compressor cannot. A technician replacing the capacitor ($150–$300 total) resolves the majority of "fan spins, compressor silent" cases.
