LG Mini-Split Blinking Light Codes Explained (2026 Guide)

LG mini-splits communicate faults through a combination of blinking indicator lights and — on most models — direct alphanumeric codes on the display panel. If your LG unit is blinking, the pattern or display code identifies exactly what is wrong. This guide explains how to read LG blink codes and what each common pattern means.

LG Indicator Light Types

Depending on your LG model, faults may appear as:

  • Alphanumeric display code (e.g., C1, E6, F1) — shown directly on the indoor unit panel or remote LCD. This is the most common on newer LG models.
  • LED blink pattern — on older or simpler models without a display, the OPERATION light blinks in a repeating sequence. Count the flashes before each pause to identify the code number.

Common LG Blink Patterns and Codes

Blinks / Code Fault Action
1 blink / C1 Indoor intake temperature sensor fault Reset; call tech if recurring
2 blinks / C2 Indoor coil temperature sensor fault Call technician — thermistor replacement
3 blinks / E3 Low pressure / refrigerant loss Call technician — EPA certified required
6 blinks / E6 Communication error indoor to outdoor Reset at breaker; check signal wire
F1 (display) Freeze protection — coil too cold Clean filter; let thaw 2–3 hrs; restart
dF (display) Defrost cycle — normal in heating mode No action — wait 3–10 minutes
Cl (display) Filter cleaning reminder Clean filter; reset filter indicator
Slow steady blink Standby / timer active — normal No action needed

Slow Blink vs Error Blink

A slow, steady blink (once every 2–3 seconds) from the OPERATION indicator is a standby signal — normal. An error blink pattern is a rapid sequence that repeats (e.g., 6 fast blinks, pause, 6 fast blinks). If you have a display-equipped model and see a two-character code (letters or numbers), that is your error code — look it up in the table above or in your owner's manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

My LG shows "dF" — is something broken?

No. "dF" stands for defrost and is completely normal during heating mode in cold weather. The outdoor coil accumulates frost during heat pump operation, and the unit periodically runs a defrost cycle (3–10 minutes) to clear it. During defrost, the outdoor fan stops and the indoor unit may blow cool air. Heating resumes automatically when defrost completes.

My LG shows "Cl" — what do I do?

This is the filter cleaning reminder — not a fault. Clean the filter following the steps in your owner's manual, then reset the indicator: press and hold the FILTER button on the remote for 3 seconds until the Cl notification clears.
