Daikin Mini-Split Not Heating: How to Fix in 2026

If your Daikin mini-split is not heating, the cause is almost always a mode setting issue, a defrost cycle in progress, or a filter that needs cleaning. In colder climates, the system's minimum operating temperature may also be a factor. This guide covers every cause in order and explains what to check and when to call a technician.

Check These First

1. Confirm HEAT mode. Press the MODE button on the Daikin remote until the sun or flame icon appears. In AUTO mode, the system decides whether to heat or cool — if the room temperature already meets the setpoint, heating will not engage.

2. Check the setpoint. In heating mode, the setpoint must be higher than the current room temperature. If the room is at 70°F and the setpoint is 68°F, the unit will not heat.

3. Is defrost running? During heating mode in winter, Daikin units run automatic defrost cycles that last 3–10 minutes. During defrost, outdoor fan stops and the indoor unit blows cool air or stops entirely. This is normal — wait 10 minutes and heating will resume.

Common Causes and Fixes

Cause DIY Fix? Action
Wrong mode (Cool or Fan) Yes Switch to HEAT mode on remote
Defrost cycle active N/A — normal Wait 10 minutes; heating will resume
Dirty filter Yes Clean filter; restart unit
Outdoor temp below rated minimum No — use backup heat Standard Daikin: below −4°F / Aurora: below −13°F
Stuck reversing valve No Call Daikin Comfort Pro technician
Low refrigerant No Call technician — EPA certified required
Error code active Depends on code Count blink pattern; see error code guide

Temperature Limits: Standard vs Aurora

Standard Daikin models are rated to operate in heating mode down to approximately −4°F (−20°C) at reduced capacity. The Aurora cold-climate series maintains heating operation down to −13°F (−25°C). Below these temperatures, output drops significantly or the system may stop operating. If your outdoor temperatures regularly fall below the unit's rated minimum, supplemental backup heat is the appropriate solution for the coldest periods — not a service call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Daikin blow cool air in heat mode?

The three most likely causes are: an active defrost cycle (temporary, waits 10 minutes), a stuck reversing valve (requires technician), or outdoor temperatures below the unit's minimum operating range. Confirm which is the case by timing how long the cool air blows. Defrost cycles resolve within 10 minutes; a stuck reversing valve causes continuous cool air in heat mode regardless of outdoor temperature.

My Daikin heats at 20°F but not at −5°F — is it broken?

Not necessarily. Standard Daikin models have reduced heating capacity below 0°F (−18°C). If you have a standard model and temperatures dropped to −5°F, the unit may have reduced output significantly or stopped heating entirely — this is operating within its design limits. An Aurora model would maintain meaningful heating at that temperature.
