Mini-Split Outdoor Unit Not Running: How to Diagnose in 2026

If your mini-split's outdoor unit is not running at all — fan silent, compressor silent — while the indoor unit is on, the cause is almost always a power problem, a protection timer, or an active fault code. In most cases you can diagnose the specific cause in under 10 minutes. This guide walks through every cause in order from most to least common.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis

Step 1 — Confirm the indoor unit is actually running in COOL or HEAT mode. The outdoor unit only runs when there is a temperature demand — set the mode to COOL with a setpoint below room temperature and wait 3 minutes.

Step 2 — Wait the 3-minute protection timer. After any power interruption, power outage, or reset, mini-split compressors have a built-in 3-minute startup delay. During this delay, the outdoor unit will not run. This is by design — it is not a fault.

Step 3 — Check the dedicated breaker. Go to your electrical panel and confirm the mini-split's dedicated breaker has not tripped. If it is in the middle position or visibly tripped, reset it and wait 3 minutes. If it trips again immediately, stop and call an electrician.

Step 4 — Check the outdoor disconnect switch. A lockable disconnect box mounted near the outdoor unit has an internal switch or pull-out fuse block. Confirm it is in the ON position. Occasionally these are accidentally turned off during maintenance or landscaping.

Step 5 — Check for an error code. Look at the indoor unit display. An active error code will prevent the outdoor unit from running. Note the code and address it.

Common Causes and Fixes

Cause DIY Fix? Action
3-minute protection timer Yes — wait Wait full 3 minutes after startup
Breaker tripped Yes Reset breaker; wait 3 minutes; monitor for re-trip
Outdoor disconnect switch OFF Yes Switch disconnect to ON position
Active error code preventing outdoor unit Depends on code Address the active fault code first
Communication wire not connected (E6 error) Partially Inspect and reseat signal wire at both units
Failed outdoor PCB No Call technician — PCB diagnosis and replacement
Compressor seized / failed No Call technician — compressor or system replacement

Frequently Asked Questions

My outdoor unit stopped running mid-cycle — what happened?

A mid-cycle outdoor unit shutdown is usually triggered by a protection system — high pressure (E1), low pressure (E2), high discharge temperature, or a compressor overload fault. These protections shut the compressor down to prevent damage. Check for an error code on the indoor unit display. If no code is showing and the indoor fan is still running, the outdoor unit may have simply completed its cycle — wait 5 minutes and see if it restarts.

Can I test my outdoor unit without the indoor unit?

No. Mini-split indoor and outdoor units are electronically interdependent — the outdoor unit only receives a run command from the indoor unit's control board via the communication wire. Operating the outdoor unit independently requires a service tool and should only be done by a trained technician.
