Mini-Split Indoor Unit Mounting Height: The Complete Guide

The height at which you mount the mini-split indoor unit significantly affects how well it distributes conditioned air, how effectively it dehumidifies, and how comfortable the occupants feel. There is a recommended mounting height range for most applications, and specific adjustments depending on ceiling height, room layout, and whether heating or cooling is the primary function. This guide covers everything your installer should know — and what you should verify before they drill the bracket holes.

Recommended Mounting Height

Most manufacturers specify mounting the indoor unit with the bottom of the unit at least 6–7 feet (1.8–2.1 metres) from the floor. This range is not arbitrary:

  • High enough to distribute conditioned air across the room before it reaches occupants at seated or standing height
  • Low enough to stay below the ceiling's thermal stratification zone where heat accumulates
  • High enough to allow the condensate drain to exit with a continuous downward slope

Cooling-primary application (hot climate) 7 ft (2.1m) — slightly higher Cold air falls; higher placement allows better mixing before reaching occupied zone
Bedroom (sleep comfort priority) 6.5–7 ft; aim louvres away from bed Avoids direct cold air draught on sleeping occupants

Clearance Requirements Above and Below

  • Above the unit: Minimum 6 inches (15cm) clearance between the top of the unit and the ceiling — required for return air intake and maintenance access
  • Sides: Minimum 8 inches (20cm) clearance on each side — allows return air flow and filter removal
  • Below the unit: No minimum, but avoid placing furniture or shelving directly below — it restricts airflow distribution

What NOT to Do

  • Do not mount the unit directly above a door — the door opening disrupts airflow distribution and the unit will short-cycle
  • Do not mount in a corner where two walls meet at 90° — air distribution will be asymmetric
  • Do not mount where the louvres would blow directly onto a bed, desk, or sofa occupied continuously — direct air draught causes discomfort even at comfortable temperatures
  • Do not mount too close to the ceiling (under 6 inches) — the return air intake on top of the unit will be restricted

Does the manufacturer's specified mounting height override what my installer recommends?

The manufacturer specifies minimum clearances that must be met. Within those constraints, the installer's positioning recommendation based on the specific room geometry is the more important practical guide. If your installer recommends a slightly different height than the standard guidance for a specific reason (unusual ceiling height, window placement, door location), that site-specific judgment is valid as long as minimum clearances are maintained.
