When Outdoor Dripping Is Normal

Situation Normal? Why It Happens
Heating mode in winter Yes Defrost cycle melts frost from outdoor coil
Cooling mode in humid weather Yes Condensation on cold refrigerant lines
Startup after long off period Yes Accumulated moisture draining
Large puddle that does not stop Possibly not May indicate blocked drain or leak

When to Be Concerned

  • Water dripping from the refrigerant line connections (may indicate a leak)
  • Ice forming heavily on the outdoor unit and not clearing within 15 minutes
  • Water running back toward the house foundation
  • Water dripping continuously even when the unit is off

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for my outdoor unit to drip during defrost?

Yes. During heating mode, frost accumulates on the outdoor coil. The system runs periodic defrost cycles that melt this frost, producing water dripping from the outdoor unit. This is completely normal and lasts 2–10 minutes per cycle.
