Mini-Split Line Set: What It Is and How Long It Can Be

A mini-split line set is the pair of copper refrigerant pipes — one suction line and one liquid line — that connect the indoor unit to the outdoor condenser.

The line set also typically includes the condensate drain line, electrical control wiring, and sometimes a communication cable, all bundled together in an insulated sleeve. Understanding line set requirements helps you plan an installation correctly and avoid costly mistakes.

What Is Inside a Line Set

Component Function Notes
Suction line (large pipe) Carries refrigerant vapor from indoor coil to outdoor compressor Must be insulated — sweating causes energy loss
Liquid line (small pipe) Carries liquid refrigerant from outdoor unit to indoor coil Smaller diameter than suction line
Condensate drain Removes moisture condensed by the indoor coil Must slope downward at minimum 1/4" per foot
Control wiring Communication between indoor and outdoor units Typically 14/4 or 14/5 wire
Power cable (some models) Runs power to indoor unit from outdoor disconnect Not all configurations include this

How Long Can a Mini-Split Line Set Be?

Brand Max Line Set Length (typical) Notes
Mitsubishi 66–164 ft (20–50 m) Varies significantly by model; check spec sheet
Daikin 65–164 ft (20–50 m) Aurora models may have different maximums
Fujitsu 98–164 ft (30–50 m) Halcyon models allow longer runs
MrCool 25–75 ft (8–23 m) DIY kits include pre-charged line sets
LG 98–164 ft (30–50 m) Verify per model specification sheet

Always verify the maximum line set length in the specific model's installation manual — maximum lengths vary between models even within the same brand. Exceeding the maximum requires refrigerant charge adjustments and may void the warranty.

Minimum Line Set Length

Most manufacturers also specify a minimum line set length — typically 10 feet (3 meters). This minimum ensures the refrigerant system has adequate volume for proper pressure balance. Installing an outdoor unit too close to the indoor unit without a minimum-length line set can cause system faults and premature compressor wear.

What Happens When a Line Set Is Too Long

  • Refrigerant must be added (typically 0.1–0.2 oz per foot over the standard length)
  • Pressure drop increases, reducing system efficiency
  • Run time increases to achieve the same temperatures
  • Operating costs increase proportionally

If your installation requires a very long line set run, discuss this with your installer before equipment selection — some models support longer runs more effectively than others.

Line Set Sizing by BTU

BTU Capacity Suction Line Diameter Liquid Line Diameter
9,000–12,000 BTU 3/8 inch 1/4 inch
18,000 BTU 1/2 inch 1/4 inch
24,000 BTU 5/8 inch 3/8 inch
36,000 BTU+ 3/4 inch 3/8 inch

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend a mini-split line set?

Yes, but it requires professional work. Line set extensions must be brazed (welded) by an EPA-certified technician and the refrigerant charge must be adjusted for the new total length. A DIY extension using compression fittings is not code-compliant and creates high leak risk.

Can a line set go through the floor or ceiling?

Yes. Line sets can run through floors, ceilings, walls, and attic spaces. They must be properly insulated where they pass through conditioned and unconditioned spaces, and protected from physical damage. Any penetrations through fire-rated assemblies must be properly sealed with approved fire-stop materials.

What is a line set cover?

A line set cover (also called a line hide or channel) is a decorative PVC sleeve that conceals the line set where it runs along exterior walls. It protects the insulation from UV degradation and improves aesthetics. Line set covers are standard practice on most residential installations.
